Saw this film not to long ago. and I highly suggest you watch it. If you’ve done any vouging move ever in your life. ESP to my dancer homies…. seriously its a must. Dont be ignorant to the origin of movement. That is all.
I wrote my thesis on this for my Black, Queer & Feminist film class and must have watched this film by Jennie Livingston at least 7 times. These people are amazing, pioneers of their time, and it does give a big history to the Vogue styles that a lot of big name performers capitalized on during their time. But also, don’t forget to pay close attention to the culture and community that the ball scene came out of. This wasn’t all about who had the dopest moves. It was about defining an identity for their community that was so widely outcast by society, and exploited by the mainstream for their talents (and even arguably by the film director herself). Pay respects to the people who fought and literally gave their lives so that future LGBTQ generations could dress and express themselves (more) freely.
